Hi,

I have a normal primary (let's call it A)/physical standby (call it B) setup. In the near future, the primary server (A) is going to be decommissioned, the original secondary (B) will become the new primary and I will need to build a new physical standby (call it C) on a new server. Can you think of ways of doing this WITHOUT an outage.

Here are my thoughts:-

I can build the new standby (C) from RMAN backups using the duplicate command just before the old primary (A) is decommissioned. I can then defer the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n so that redo transport services are deferred. LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_n will contain a DNS entry which can be switched over to the IP address of the new standby (C). The DNS switch over can occur. Once this has happened I can ENABLE the LOG_ARCHIVE_DEST_STATE_n and start MRP on the new standby.

I think that the above look OK and can foresee no real problems with it.

Can you provide feedback on the above please and have any of you carried out this sort of procedure.

Remember, we are trying to achieve NO OUTAGE.

Thanks in advance,

Ken.
