Hello,

One of the user password has been changed and now i want to modify it. I'm able to use the root password but while i did su - username and passwd: it asks for current password. I don't know this passowrd so please suggest me a workaround.

I have Red Hat Linux environment but only have access to $ prompt.

Also can someone suggest me how to check the log to see how and who changed the user password.

thanks,
neel

As root, you should be able to enter...

passwd <username>

which would then allow you to set a new password for <username>. At least that's how it works in Sun Solaris.

Thanks a lot guys for all the help......

Well I tried doing that but "passwd <username>" prompted me for old password of <username> (which i was not aware about)...
Then I just did passwd -d <username> which made the account passwordless and I was able to set a new password for it.

I think to go to system logs folder probably I need access to any sort of GUI but in my case as i mentioned earlier also I can only access command line interface.Anyways I will try to dig into logs and update the relevant findings...

Thanks once again....
