I'm new to RAC and my client is using 9i Release 2.

I've studied Oracle documentation but I'm a bit confused about Oracle Guard (both I & II).

According to Oracle docs, RAC Guard (I) is an integrated part of Oracle RAC. Is it an optional or mandatory component ?

Isn't the fail-over feature already provided by RAC ? What are the added benefits of running RAC Guard (I) ?

According to Oracle docs, RAC Guard I supports the fail-over configuration (active-passive) only and only RAC Guard II supports active-active mode, right ?
