Unable to delete SMON trace file [message #567667]

Dear All,

In my database smon tracefile was huge,now we want to delete the same,I also tried with ordebug operation but no use,Kindly help me regarding this and advice to delete tracfile which Smon generates.

You can delete the trace file if it does not belong to the current instance.
If it does you have to first stop the instance to be able to delete the file.

Dear Michel,

Trace is for current instance,we dont want to stop the instance as this is production.Kindly advice for any possible ways to stop trace.

Not possible unless you ask Microsoft to change its file locking management policy.
Not that in Unix you could "rm" the file but the space is not released until the last process holding a handle on it close it.

I think you may be able to use the ocopy utility in %ORACLE_HOME%\bin to copy a small file (anything will do) over the large smon trace file while it is open, and so free up the space. I haven't tested this, but it will cost you nothing to try.

I tried using this but no use.
C:\Documents and Settings\webserver>ocopy E:\admin\tunise\bdump\tunise_lgwr_3296.trc E:\admin\tunise\bdump\tunise_smon_3304.TRC
E:\ADMIN\TUNISE\BDUMP\TUNISE_SMON_3304.TRC
OCOPY - Unable to open output file E:\ADMIN\TUNISE\BDUMP\TUNISE_SMON_3304.TRC.

Only thing we need to do now get downtime and remove that trace.Thanks for your usefull advice.
