Hello everyone!

We will be having a meeting with our client regarding their Database Server Migration (They are planning to buy a new server). Their current database is Oracle 10gR2, they will not upgrade to 11g, they just plan to migrate to a new more powerful machine.

I was planning to ask the following questions.
1. Specifications of the current server and the new one.
2. Operation system (I think they will use same OS, just an updated one)
3. Can the business afford full downtime on current servers?
4. Size of the DB, because it can take hours to move large files.

Is there anything more? And is there documentation regarding Server Migration (Change of machine only, not database upgrade or anything, I'm trying to search for it though)

Thanks! Smile

I'd setup Data Guard (DG) or roll my own DG between the two systems,
so total down time would be less than a few minutes at cut over time.

Thanks! I don't think they will use Data Guard.. It is not on their option. Smile

>It is not on their option.
any other alternative only increases down time; which is OK by me.

An RMAN duplicate can be almost as fast a cut over as Data Guard, and doesn't need Enterprise Edition licences. You would still need to check with Oracle whether you would need to license both machines.

Are you talking about this?
Database Duplication with RMAN
http://docs.oracle.com/cd/B19306_01/backup.102/b14191/rcmconc2.htm#i1006532

I see.. I think their options were FULL EXP/IMP, Expdp/Impdp, and RMAN.
The thing is that I want to test it before applying things in their production database server, but the problem is that they decided to use AIX 6.1 Operating System.. And I think this one will be needing an IBM machine (PowerPC processor?), we only have 32-bit and 64-bit here.. I think virtual machine will not work either.. Sad
