Hi Everyone,

I would like to pursue pl/sql developer as my carrier. So I would like to create a setup in the following manner in my windows7(64 bit) laptop.

Since I heard that,In real time the setup will be look like as follows

Windows7 as front end
Toad --> to practice Pl/Sql(Preferred use in windows7)
Solaris OS (To install Oracle 10g in Solaris & practice scripting)
Virtual Box (Open source tool to run both windows and solaris)

Now please let me know How I can create setup so that I can accomplish following things(To gain knowledge in programming/scripting).

1.Both OS has to be run simultaneously with Virtual Box So that
Oracle will be running in backend(Solaris)
2.Practicing Oracle Pl/sql in Toad (Windows7)
3.Practicing shell scripting in Solaris.

Is it possible to create the setup as i mentioned above. If not please give your feedback/comments/suggestions.

Regards,
Srikanth

Toad is just a gui tool.
If you know you database concepts, any GUI tool will suffice.
Oracle SQL Developer is free.

Oracle behaves the same in any OS (In a generalized way).
So does Oracle pl/sql.
To learn pl/sql, what you are trying to do is overkill. It would be nice though. But you will
be spending a lot of time worrying about things
that are not immediately pertinent.

I would just install Oracle on windows and use a local GUI tool.
To get a little fancy,
install a linux distribution , Oracle on linux and sql-developer on linux.

If I were you: as you use MS Windows 7 (shouldn't be HOME edition!), I'd install Oracle 11g XE database. Nothing else.

Then, bookmark 11g documentation page (Master Book list!) and read:
- Concepts
- 2 day DBA
- SQL*Plus User's Guide and Reference
- SQL Language Reference
- PL/SQL Language Reference

As a tool, use SQL*Plus only. After you finish all those books, you'll understand what Oracle is and how it works. Then, if you wish, install some GUI tool.

As of different operating systems, virtual machines you mention and similar stuff, I'd say that - for a beginner - these would be unnecessary overhead.

Master Book List is comprehensive; it contains everything you need to know. Certainly, there are forums, blogs as well. Welcome to Oracle world!
