Hi,

I'd like to know your opinion what it's better to use.
If private or public rollback segments ?

Thanks for your answer

private rollback segments are almost never used in oracle. to use those means you have rollback segments for each and every user on the system. instead you create public rollback segments and the whole db can use them.

Hi radim,

To my knowledge,

Private rollback segments are ones that are created in a single instance environment.

Now lets us put ourselves in a parallel server option environment....
Every instance will have its own rollback segment for the users of ot to access them. Apart from that a few public rollback segments will also be created so that when all the private rb segs are engaged, then these public rb segs come to rescue avoiding contentions for rb segs.

This e.g would put more light on the subject.

instances A , B, C.
---------------------
users for each inst a1 b1 c1
a2 b2 c2
a3 b3 c3
a4 -- c4
a5 -- --
Private
Rb segs for each inst rba1 rbb1 rbc1
rba2 rbb2 rbc2
rba3 rbb3 rbc3

Public RB segs rbsX rbsY rbsZ

rba will be assigned to users of inst A only,
rbb will be assigned to users of inst B only,
rbc will be assigned to users of inst C only,
...
BUT
rbsX, rbsY & rbsZ will be of avail to users of any inst(A,B,C)

Bye

Hi Slum,

I read DBA's discussion and the result was don't use public rollback segments.
I'm picking up knowledge about oracle (I hope this the right phrase, 'cause english isn't my native language:).
I'm DBA, but I'd like to know, how others DBA managing their db server. Here is link to mention discussion ->
http://www.quest-pipelines.com/newsletter-v2/rseg.htm

pls read it and let me know you opinion :)

thanks in advance
Radim
