I have multiple Oracle 8.17 databases running on the same server. Each instance is currently using about 13 meg when started. There are typically only 1 or 2 people logged in and the activity is minimal. When I create similar size 9i databases on the same server and set the initialization parameters to match those of my 8.17 databases it is taking 25 meg of memory when the instance is started. I can't get it below that number. I have tweaked the share_pool_size, large_pool_size, db_block_size and db_block_size and db_cache_size. Am I missing something?

Interesting problem. What kind of server are they on? (windows 2k/nt or unix?) and can you see the breakdown of what/how many oracle process are using the 25 megs?

when you type show sga do the #'s there jive with your init.ora parameters?

According to the NT windows services screen the instances is started. If I start and stop the instance while monitoring memory usage I see it drop and rise by 25 meg. When I try to connect to the instances via sql plus or any other tool that is when I get the "memory realm is not available" message.
