I am trying to install Oracle8i Server v 8.1.7 on one of my PC with P4 1.5GHz, 128 MB RDRAM. For some reason when I double click on the setup.exe icon to launch the Oracle installer, the Hour glass cursor shows up for a couple of seconds and nothing happens after that. Does anyone knows what could be the problem and how to help me?

Find the file symcjit.dll, rename it to whatever i.e symcjit.dll to symcjit.tmp , and try install again. It is because you are installing on a Pentiun 4, there are some Oracle issues with Pentium 4.

Setup should work fine after you have rename the file.

There are major problems with oracle 8170 server on P4, there is a patch that you need to download from Metalink which is Oracle's web site support. After you get that patch which installs the installer then there is no problem with Oracle 8170... I have done it various times this way
