Hi to everyone,

I want to install oracle 8i on Linux. At present I am using 8i on windows 2003. I tried to install it on (Linux version of 8i) on red hat enterprise 5.5, but am not able to. The installation gets aborted midway. Can anyone suggest which version of Linux is best suited for oracle 8i. Enterprise 5.5 supports 10g, but there is a huge amount of changes that have to be made since my forms are in forms 5. So, till such time I thought of using 8i.
Can some one please help me.

Regards

Alister

Linux did not exist when V8 was released.
I ran V8 Oracle on Solaris 7 (SPARC h/w & pre X86 Solaris)
Too bad you choose to stay with ancient s/w & every day you delay the changes will increase.

Hi - I used to run 8i on SUSE 6.x, I remember having trouble with Java (I can't remember the release needed)which is needed for the installer, and you need the correct version of glibc (2.1, perhaps?)

Hello Alister,

Have you tried to install Oracle 11g on Redhat Enterprise Linux 5 or later?

You may need to have very little changes with the change from Database 8i to Database 11g. Such as SELECT USER FROM SYS.DUAL instead on using SELECT USER FROM DUAL in 6i forms and reports. You can very easily use Forms and Reports developed by Oracle Developer 6i with Oracle Database 11g in Linux 11g.
