One step further to "embed or block" Open Source.

Did you see that the last version of Open Office is now called Oracle (Open) Office?

This is not good.

One of the main advantages (aside from more platform options) I saw in Java over .net is that it was easier to deploy without worrying about licenses etc...

Makes me wonder if it might be a good idea to begin looking for alternatives to Oracle technology to keep options open, when they jump all over the lock-down bandwagon.

I really don't get the fuzz over all this.
First of all, Oracle is not blind, not insane, or otherwise not from this world, so I really doubt if all the FUD is rightful.
Second, I hear a lot of people crying (not just here, but especially at sites like slashdot) "I BOUGHT my iPhone, so I should be able to do with it whatever I want", yet when Oracle buys Sun, they cry when Oracle wants to change a single bit in the code.
Third, where on OpenOffice.org's site can you see any reference to Oracle, except for some locations where there used to be a Sun logo? Where do you see ANY reference to the name Oracle Office on that site?
You are confusing StarOffice/StarSuite with OpenOffice.org. From Oracle's website: "Oracle Open Office (formerly StarOffice and StarSuite) is a complete open-standard office productivity suite"
StarOffice and StarSuite have always been commercial products.
See? This is part of the FUD I was referring to..

http://www.openoffice.org/ at the bottom of the page, Oracle logo.

Still at the bottom of the page:

When you start 3.2.1 OpenOffice program, the splash screen contains the Oracle logo (sorry can't capture it).

Sure, and before Oracle bought the stuff, there were all Sun. Nobody complained about that.

Here are 2 images from OpenOffice.org 3.2.1

/forum/fa/8174/0/
/forum/fa/8175/0/

The second one is the about box (in french).
It says (about):
Copyright © 2000, 2010 Oracle and/or its subsidiaries. All rights reserved.
This product has been created by Oracle from OpenOffice.org.
OpenOffice.org thanks all the community members and especially those mentioned in the site http://www.openoffice.org/welcome/credits.html.

As said before, this used to be all Sun. Look at 3.1's splash & copyright notices. Nothing new there.
/forum/fa/8176/0/
What I disputed was your unfounded statement that OpenOffice was now called Oracle Office.

Changing copyright notices is a very normal practice after mergers.
