Any doc appreciated..

if "pointer-based" means "point in time", no it is not possible, RMAN backs up what is current and not what was in the past.

Thanks for reply....

I don't understand what "in the past means" ...

A point-in time snapshot is just a frozen picture of the DB....

if you shutdown your DB now and backup it with RMAN next week, it is also in the past....

what's the problem ???

Regards

So what do you mean with your "point-in-time" backup?
If you want to mean backup at a precise scn for all data, RMAN does not do this, it backups the data as there are when it reads them.

a pointer based snapshot is a set of pointers addressing reals blocks of the DB if not modified and a copy of the modified blocks before modification for those modified since snapshot...

it's a kind of dynamic clone...

understand what i mean ?

Michel si tu es français on pourrais peut etre changer de langue Razz

Thanks

Ok I understand what you mean.
As far as I know RMAN does not natively offer this feature, maybe through a MML.

I keep this topic in english as other more skilled people like Mahesh Rajendran can answer (if we move to french then the topic should have to be moved to French forum).
