I'm curious about people's opinion on this statement:

"The reason I use raw partitions is that I don't want to run into a situation that if the Unix administrator (or whoever) doesn't shutdown the machine properly and I'll have to recover the database. Robustness is always first thing in my mind when I build a database. Performance will not be a problem for these databases in our case. Backup and recovery have also been taken care of. Thanks"

Wouldn't an instance recovery be necessary regardless of the storage method if the server went away unexpectedly?

Is there a good source of reference on when to use Raw devices instead of Unix file systems?
