If someone has a second, I'd appreciate a bit of advice. I'm very interested in Oracle database programming - being a novice, I decided to first learn the fundamentals of SQL. However, in the interest of hands-on experience, I'm at a lack for a good program with which to practice (I do, however, have a good text which unfortunately only comes with a read-only database.) Also, any other advice would be welcome. Thanks.

You can joint the technet.oracle.com to download the Personal Oracle and learn from there. There are couple demos come with the database and you can practice you SQLs.
