hi,
Pls. can anyone tell me that on the dos prompt, or sql
, accessing oracle engine from the server ,
can i know the database name to which i connected ?
pls. reply am ASAP at amber@kiit.edu.pk

Not sure if I understand your question.
1. If you are using server manager on dos to connect to a database, you can always type in "set oracle_sid=instance_name" before typing svrmgrl. In this way you know to which database you are connecting to.
2. Now if you are using sqlplus (dos or windows), there is a connect_string field that you have to fill up together with the username and password. The connect_string identifies which database you are connecting to. Not only that it tells you the port, machine, protocol that you are using to connect to a particular database. All these information should be in your tnsnames.ora file (local naming).
3. Once you are connected, you can always do" select * from v$database" or "select * from v$thread" to verify the instance name or database name.
